Chatham House Rule

Topic Progress:

Facilitating Sensitive Conversations

Chatham House is a place and an organization dedicated to facilitating substantive conversations regarding international affairs. The Chatham House Rule was developed to aid the free discussion of sensitive issues:

Chatham House Rule
Chatham House, London

When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed.

We’ve adopted the rule for the conversations we facilitate.

  • The rule is invoked by default.
  • Participants can request that we go “off the record” when strict confidentiality is required.
