Tell Your Story

Are you a founder of a business that makes original products sold direct-to-consumers online? We’d like to help spread the word about you and your company. Just fill out and submit the interview form below. There’s no charge.

This service is a collaboration with Mario Schulzke, the creator of IdeaMensch, an interview site that features thousands of entrepreneur interviews that has cultivated an audience measured in the tens of thousands.

Your full interview will be published here on the Human Scale Business website. Mario will publish excerpts selected by him in a special series of posts to the IdeaMensch site. Together, we’ll promote your interview to our respective audiences.

How to Submit an Interview

Please read the following carefully. It will save you time and yield a better outcome. If you have any questions about the process, scroll down to the FAQ section.

  1. Complete a bio. Your personal bio should be between 200 and 500 words written in third person narrative (i.e. use “he” or “she” but never “I”, “we”, or “you”. Tell us about yourself in this section rather than your business.
  2. Prepare your answers. Review the interview questions listed below. Take your time, put in some effort, and answer all the questions as completely and honestly as possible. There’s no deadline, and this is a chance to really get your story across to your audience and peers. Make it count.
  3. Take a picture. You’ll need to submit a photograph of yourself. (We humans love to see faces.) The photo should be high-resolution (at least 1050 pixels wide × 320 pixels high in JPG format – the bigger the better). Please don’t enlarge a low-resolution photo, because we won’t be able to use it. In order to use your photo as post header, we’ll try to crop it so your face is toward the right side of the page:

This is our goal: a high-resolution image that can be cropped so your face is to the right.

  1. Gather your contact information. How can people connect with you via your business website or your personal Twitter, LinkedIn, or Facebook accounts? We require your personal email address, but won’t share it.
  2. Use the web form below to submit your interview. Copy (Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-Shift-V) your answers into the designated field; attach your photograph; complete all other fields; and click “Submit.”

If you’ve submitted a complete interview with an appropriately sized, high-resolution photograph, we’ll do a quick grammar check and place your interview in the queue for publishing in the order received.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's in it for me?

Some exposure, a little SEO backlink love, and a great calling card to share with your audience.

Why are you doing this? What's the catch?

There’s no catch and no obligation on your part other than to give the interview your best effort. We think human scale businesses like yours are important and worth supporting. Because the interview process is standardized and semi-automated, it doesn’t take us a huge amount of time, and we get the chance to learn. This is the kind of stuff we do for fun around here.

Under what conditions might you decline to publish an interview?

It’s unlikely that we would decline to publish an interview as long as you are a founder or co-founder of a business that makes original products sold direct-to-consumers online. However, if you don’t submit a complete form (including a large, high-resolution photograph) or if it’s apparent that you put little thought or effort into the interview, we’re not obligated to publish.

Will you proofread and edit my submission?

We’ll give your submission the once-over, and we’ll check for typos and grammatical errors. However, it’s up to you to make a submission that will reflect well on you. That said, as time permits, we’ll look for ways to improve the clarity and readability of your interview. We want you to shine.

I don't make my own product, or I don't sell direct-to-consumers online. Can I still submit an interview?

Even if you are not a fit for Human Scale Business, you may want to check out IdeaMensch. Mario’s site serves a broader range of entrepreneurs, including service businesses and social ventures.

Do I have to answer all the interview questions?

Yes, please. For this to work as an effective way to give you and your business exposure, we have to present our mutual audience with information that has depth and value. Otherwise, it’s just exercise that you probably don’t need.

What happens if I don't answer all the questions?

If you skip one question, we’re probably not going to have a cow. If you skip two or more, we may decide not to publish your interview.

How long will it take to publish my interview after I submit it?

Our current goal is to publish 2 to 4 interviews per month. That means our publication backlog ranges from 4 to 6 weeks.

What's with the terms and conditions to submitting my interview?

As a practical matter, we need you to assure us that a) you actually wrote the interview, b) you have the rights to use the photograph you submitted, and c) we have permission to use the content you submitted on the Human Scale Business and IdeaMensch sites, via social media, in our email newsletters, in ebooks, courses, presentations, infographics, etc. without having to ask you for further permission or to provide you with compensation. If we do use your material, we’ll provide appropriate credit and, when possible, link back to the original interview.

Still have a question?
